June 2019 - Marilyn WilliamsHow did you come to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana?
Our charismatic President, Sister Fontenot reached out to me at the perfect time in my life. My husband is huge advocate for our country and President and although I’ve been his biggest cheerleader, I felt that I could also serve adding my conservative voice alongside his. Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you? Outside of SWLA Republican Women, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a busy private practice. I’m also a wife and the mother of three children and two stepchildren. On top of that, I enjoy spending time with my best friend, my mother. |
What is something most people might not know about you?
I’m at my best when I am doing and speaking about the things I value most: faith, family, food (I love to cook) and our freedom in the USA.
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why?
My daddy taught me the value of serving with love and honor in our community, state and country. I feel blessed to have had such a cornerstone rock for a father. He taught us the value of people and how to live honorably. My husband walked into my life and I saw so many of the same qualities. My husband has encouraged me to step up and put a face and voice to our silent majority. We have been sitting back for too long. It’s time to be bold. Daddy would be proud of who I have become.
What do you love the most about our organization?
I love the sense of unity and sisterhood within our Republican Women. We are a strong and encouraging force. We are all coming together with like minds and a heart to love our country back to its foundation - the Constitution and Bill of Rights. ‘We the People’ need to stand up for these core values. It’s time to harness the spirit of 1776. Republican Women embody and support that force.

May 2019 - Brenda DeFeliceHow did you come to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana? I came to know and love the women who make up the membership of the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana after attending several RWSWLA meetings in my role as the sponsor of the Sam Houston TeenAge Republicans Club. I joined shortly afterwards.
Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you? My responsibilities as a high school mathematics teacher (Geometry through AP Calculus) of gifted students at Sam Houston High School keep me quite busy. I love what I do, and I know that this role is God’s vocational calling in my life. I also privately tutor and teach boot-camp |
classes to help students prepare for the ACT college admissions exam. When not at school, I enjoy playing board games with the family, organizing anything and everything, and traveling. My husband and I have three children: two in their twenties with the caboose starting high school this fall.
What is something most people might not know about you? This is a fun question. Things Most People Might Not Know About Me: I have a twin sister. I do not like to fly. I once held my high school’s track record for the mile for five years in a row. I love dirt-track 410-sprintcar racing and NASCAR. I have a quirky obsession with the Presidency of the United States and have visited all of the presidential libraries (and gotten the gift for doing so from The National Archives). I play a mean game of ping pong. I have traveled to 5 continents, 24 countries, and 49 states (one day, Alaska…one day). In the tradition in which I was raised, I try not to have idle time—I purposefully work and I purposefully rest…perhaps my favorite Biblical and conservative principle of all.
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why? I believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, limited government, free enterprise, personal responsibility, a strong unwavering national defense, and individual rights given to us by our Creator. I am pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, and pro-America. My parents laid the foundation for my beliefs, and it is no surprise that my teenage and college years were in the 1980s….when President Ronald Reagan reminded us all of that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction” and that this great nation of ours is truly a “shining city on a hill.” He has been my favorite Republican figure in my lifetime.
What do you love the most about our organization? With every speaker, with every prayer, with every event, with every campaign, with every purpose—this organization stays true to the values that I hold dear. President George H.W. Bush encouraged communities to come together as “a thousand points of light” to make our nation, truly, that shining city on a hill that President Reagan so dearly loved. The Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana shines as a beacon of conservative values in our little corner of this country, and I am so proud to be counted among its members. — Brenda DeFelice

April 2019 - Kathy Trahan! It is such an honor to have Kathy as part of our club. She represents everything that it means to be a Republican woman by serving others daily and living out her conservative
How did you come to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana? My dear friend, Laura Moody introduced me to the club after I retired from Conoco Refinery. I knew several of the ladies already and I enjoyed visiting with them and meeting new people as well as hearing the speakers and subjects that were of interest.
Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you? My day can start slowly with prayer, chores, running errands for my husband and I, reading, cooking; or if I get a call from my Lake Charles daughter or son-in-law, I may be picking up a grandchild or running an errand for them. |
If I get a call from my Houston daughter, it may mean an out of town trip to help her there. What is something most people might not know about you? My oldest granddaughter has been living with us for four years attending McNeese and is graduating May 11 in education (grades pre-k thru 3rd). It has been a pleasure to really get to know her before she goes off to start her “life”. I have seven grandchildren: the college senior, one high school junior, two sophomores, two 7th graders and a 5th grader. I belong to a spiritual study group of 16 ladies that meets once a month. I also organize a Conoco retiree covered dish lunch in October.
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why? I loved President Reagan for his conservativism and strong policies. He not only inspired the American people but also leaders from other countries. But I also love the way President Trump says he is going to do something and really does it. I am not sure any other president could accomplish as much as he has with all the negativity and bashing he has to endure.
What do you love the most about our organization? The PEOPLE!!!! This organization seems to keep us abreast of what is going on in our community, state and nation. I absolutely love the Pillows Project and our Teenage Republicans from Sam Houston. They are our future. —Kathy Trahan

March 2019 - Laura Moody!“Thanks for this honor!
While I was employed by the State of Louisiana I would see activities of this organization and wish to be a part of it. As soon as I retired I attended a couple of meetings. I ran into people I knew so I joined. My day starts with water exercise, mass , and running errands. Then it is off to whatever activity involves the grandchildren. People may not know I’m the mother of twin girls and grandmother to 8 grandsons and one granddaughter. Lately, the most inspiring Republican is President Trump. I feel he puts American’s interest first and has an uphill battle to get things done. What I like most about our club is the welcoming feeling I have felt since day one. “ —Laura Moody |
February 2019 - Sebrina CuretHow did you come to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana? “Several Republican Women encouraged me to attend, but Sharon Denson kept inviting me as a guest and encouraged me to join. I loved the luncheons, they were so informative on a wide variety of topics that are pertinent to life in Southwest Louisiana.”
Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you? “I am a mother of two daughters, Isabella and Charlee, married to Charles F. Curet and I am the owner of SLS Digital Consulting, a digital marketing company focused on helping small local business compete online. My days spent juggling work-life balance.” |
What is something most people might not know about you? “I attend my first Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana meeting in the early 90s. A very dear friend, Marge Munro invited me, I have been in awe of your work ever since. “
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why? “I don't have a single inspiring Republican figure, I have groups of them. I believe all good work starts locally. For me, it's groups like Republican Women and RPEC that inspire me. If you want to effect change, you start at home.”
What do you love the most about our organization? “I believe that our group of Republican Women have such dedicated members that they can be called upon to accomplish any task set before them.

January 2019 - Janice AckleyBesides being an amazing Republican woman, Janice Ackley has more than 25 years of advertising, marketing and healthcare management experience. Janice is currently the Region V Manager for The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco Free Living at Louisiana Public Health Institute. She led the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation Challenge Grant that invested over $1.5M in 25+ initiatives focused on reducing skyrocketing obesity rates in Southwest Louisiana. She also assisted in the launch of Healthier Southwest Louisiana and the Well-Ahead Louisiana programs. She served as the Regional Director for American Heart Association, Executive Director for the West Calcasieu Chamber of Commerce, and the Director of Marketing for Lake Area Medical Center, Lake Charles Memorial, and Humana Hospital—Houston.
|
Janice came to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana from a simple invitation from long-time member, Beth Morris. “When I joined the RWSWLA, I also became a member of the National Federation of Republic Women, the largest and most influential Republican women’s group in the nation,” states Ackley. “I’m proud to join these other Republican women to represent the party that first made it possible for women to vote in the U.S.! Together, we have a loud impactful voice!” she continues. Ackley enjoys doing the publicity for the organization. RWSWLA is a shining star and currently the second largest organization in Louisiana and this is an exciting time as we work together to make RWSWLA the #1 club in the state by 2020.
After Ronald Reagan, Nikki Haley is definitely the most inspiring Republican figure to Janice. Nikki is a strong woman, wife, and mother and stays feminine while commanding a clear, concise voice for American leadership and values. She has a bright future and will be a key player in the future of our nation and party.
Ackley received a B.S. in Mass Communications and a Fellowship in the LSU Academy of Politics. She and her husband of 31 years, Keith, reside in Sulphur. May 2018- Marsha SpearHow did you come to join the Republican Women of SWLA?
When we moved here from the Caribbean in 2001, a long time high school friend invited me to a meeting. She said I would meet some really great ladies and she was right. Now I enjoy keeping up with everyone by email and making sure they RSVP to all of our functions. Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you? I do a lot of activities at Trinity Baptist Church. I am currently in charge of a new ministry there for widows, WINGS (widows in God's service). WINGS keeps me very busy. What is something most people might not know about you? When I was young I played the accordion. My Dad worked for Conoco and I was always asked to "entertain" at their picnics and other meetings. |
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why?
I would have to say Barbara Bush. She stood up for what she believed was right and just, plus she was very kind and unpretentious. I liked her "pearls", they made a statement too.
What do you love the most about our organization?
The members of our club are very friendly. We have very good programs and we are involved in our city, state and federal government events. We are not a social organization although we do have some great parties.

How did you come to join the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana?
I joined the Republican Women because a friend, Jacinda Vincent, was already an active member and invited me to a lunch. I enjoyed the meeting and the speaker and came the next month. I joined because I could see the great things the group does for others and the need to support our Republican leaders.
Outside of being an amazing Republican woman, what does a normal day hold for you?
I am a full time Realtor and have been one for over 20 years. I am also a wife, mother and a grandmother. I am active with my husband in several organizations and our Krewe and with my grand kids watching sports and running their taxi service if Mom and Dad are at work.
What is something most people might not know about you?
Most people may not know I love to spend time at Toledo Bend at our fishing camp and enjoy the water. I also own my own motorcycle and enjoy any kind of outdoor sports. I mow my grass and try to keep up with my flower beds, while my husband does the back yard at our home.
Who has been the most inspiring Republican figure to you and why?
I am not sure there is one person who is the most inspiring to me but I believe the Republican Party is based on the idea that each person is responsible for his own place within society. The Republicans believe that the government’s role is to secure the benefits of society for everyone and they believe in limiting the government’s intervention in individual rights towards prosperity. These are also my beliefs.
What do you love the most about our organization?
I love how the group stands together and is active on both the local and state level. I appreciate how the group is always looking at speakers. I admire how the group raises money for the troops. Awarding a scholarship to a Republican teen each year is also top of my list.
I just want to say thank you and I am humbled and appreciate being nominated as the member of the month.

God has blessed us with 3 children and 5 wonderful grandchildren that we try to encourage in their various activities.
What’s a fun fact that people may not know about you?
I love all kinds of music and with the culture we have in Louisiana there is no shortage of great musicians and singers. But, my most favorite activity is anything outdoors; fishing, hunting and camping.
What’s your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
Such a great group of like-minded women; they try and support any activity that promotes Christian principles and conservative values. Proud that we have been a part of the “Pillows for Troops” which is such an awesome endeavor.

How did you join the Republican Women of SWLA?
Beth Morris asked me to join the Republican Women of SWLA. She was so persistent, I went to a meeting and joined that day. I’ve been grateful for her persistence ever since!
What does a day in the life of Rosemary Smith look like outside of being an awesome Republican Woman?
Sitting around drives me crazy, so I’m always busy with yard work, working out at the gym, or reading. I love to make people smile, so I participate in the “Caring Ministry” of my church by writing get well cards to members of the parish who are on the prayer list. On Sundays I am a greeter at our church, which enables me meet and get to know the people of our church.
What is a fun fact that people may not know about you?
I ran the first “Cowboy Gallop 10 Mile Fun Run” when I was 34. When I won the women’s division, they didn’t have a trophy for my age group so they had to give me the trophy for the 19-21 year old division. I was a cheerleader at Kinder High School and married the star football player. We’ve now been married for 51 years, have two children and 7 grandchildren. I grew up in a family of seven girls and no boys in a farm house with only two bedrooms and one bathroom!
What is your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
I love positive people. It’s been the best organization I’ve ever belonged to. I enjoy the activities such as the “pillows for troops” raffle. I love being involved with this group of loving, dedicated, energetic ladies!

September 2017- Janice Areno
How did you join the Republican Women of SWLA?
I joined Calcasieu Republican Women around 1972-75, at the urging of Mrs. Robert P. Howell, who was my boss’s mother. I have been a continuous member since that time, some 42+ years. In 1990, we re-organized as Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana, due to all the fallout from the Edwards-Roemer-Duke-Holloway election fiasco. I have served in every local office of the club. I have also served as State Recording Secretary, State Treasurer, and State Parliamentarian (for six different terms under three different State Presidents).
What does a day in the life of Janice Areno look like outside of being an awesome Republican Woman?
I still work full time, so that takes up most of my time. I work for the Bel-Blake Families. For fun, I love to fish and deer hunt. They keep scheduling the fall board meeting on opening day of deer season in October and some years, I have chosen the deer hunting.
What’s a fun fact that people may not know about you?
I have a big place to keep up, plus our old place. I love mowing and have three zto riding lawn mowers. It is not unusual for me to try mowing in places that I shouldn’t and get bogged and have to be pulled out. I carry a tow strap on my mower.
What’s your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
I love the feeling of patriotism among the members and I have an extreme love for God and our Country. I am so happy to have President Trump and pray that he will be able to get some of the things accomplished that he ran his campaign on.

How did you join the Republican Women of SWLA?
I retired in 2003 after 32 years of teaching highschool math and computer science. I ran into a former student, Sharon Galicia, and during our catch-up conversation she told me about the activities of the RWSWLA and invited me to a meeting. It was during President Bush's re-election campaign and I knew I'd love to be able to help with that.
What does a day in the life of Sharon Denson look like outside of being an awesome Republican Woman?
My days are filled with spending time with my loving husband and our five wonderful grandchildren. I also enjoy having fun lunches with old and new friends at places that have no resemblance to a school cafeteria!
What’s a fun fact that people may not know about you?
Something you probably don't know about me is that I love all sports. I played basketball (when girls played half-court), learned to water ski before I could swim, taught swimming lessons, and was the sponsor of SHHS tennis team for several years. But my favorite sport is softball. I played from age eleven until I was almost 40 and for most of those years I played catcher. My last tournament, played in the rain and mud for 3 days, prompted me to finally hang up my cleats.
What’s your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
The thing I enjoy most about belonging to RWSWLA is being able to associate with so many wonderful, patriotic folks who share my conservative values. They understand what is wrong with our country today and work hard trying to make it RIGHT!!

May 2017- Beth Morris
Beth Morris is our May member of the month. After retiring from the Calcasieu Parish School Board, Beth found an announcement in the paper, some eighteen years ago, about the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana’s monthly meeting. She says she got involved right away and the “rest is history”.
A day in the life of Beth Morris is fun, she says. She is up fairly early drinking her morning coffee with her husband, her hero of fifty three years. Then its off for more coffee, a luncheon or function for a variety of different things.
A fun fact you may not know about Beth is that she worked in Washington, D.C. before she was married. She worked out of the Pentagon in the War Gaming Department.
Her favorite thing about the Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana is its an organization where one can be as busy as she wants whether she is young or “GOLD”. She loves seeing young women in leadership roles in our club that are doing such a great job.
The Republican Women are so excited to have such an awesome member like Beth and appreciate her hard work and efforts to make our organization great!

March 2017- Roby Dyer
Roby Dyer is our March Member of the Month! She also happens to be our new Regional Vice President for the LFRW. See below for a quick interview to learn more about her.
How did you join the Republican Women of SWLA?
After my children left for college and with Syd working long hours at the hospital, I was looking for the right organization to volunteer. I always had an interest in politics and wanted to know more about the candidates that were running for office, as well as any other items on the ballot. The RW of SWLA was a perfect fit for me.
What does a day in the life of Roby Dyer look like outside of being an awesome Republican Woman?
My day starts with a cup of coffee and walking our miniature pinscher, Dalton. Then we have 7 horses to take care of, Rocky, Ana, Glory, Stormy, Jacquesimo, Sadie, & Chet. I try to fit in a workout before whatever the day brings. It may be playing with my 4 year old granddaughter, Leah, or taking care of RW & RPEC duties. Most days are full.
What’s a fun fact that people may not know about you?
I love sea turtles! We booked a sailing trip 2 years ago in St. Thomas just to swim with them. I would love to see them hatch and run to the ocean. It’s on the bucket list!
What’s your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
The camaraderie. We all have different personalities that somehow work well together. I have made so many great friends through the RW of SWLA as well as LFRW and NFRW.

Sister Fontenot is our first Member of the Month! She also happens to be our new Vice President. See below for a quick interview to learn more about her.
How did you join the Republican Women of SWLA?
I joined after I became friends with Jackie Hebert and Roby Dyer. They constantly talked about the Club and what great work was being done. I couldn't wait to become a member, and our club has superseded my expectations with it's wonderful members and their commitment to make America great again!
What does a day in the life of Sister Fontenot look like outside of being an awesome Republican Women?
A day in my life is always busy! I teach at two gyms, Gigi's and Christus Athletic Club. I stay busy working on choreography, running errands, spending time with my husband, friends, family and my two puppies, working in my yard, etc. I literally never sit down!
What’s a fun fact that people may not know about you?
I love the spirit of adventure and a challenge--climbing a 60 foot wall and zip lining in Hawaii, parasailing in Nassau, climbing part of Machu Picchu in Peru, going on a safari in Africa, climbing 400 steps of Potala Palace in Tibet, etc.
What’s your favorite thing about the Republican Women of SWLA?
I am SO proud to be a member of the Republican Women of SWLA. It is a Club composed of so many energetic, intelligent women who work effortlessly to stay informed on the local, state and national level. Our Republican Women work hard to further our ideals and beliefs in God and this country, and to elect and support our Republican political candidates who share our common goals. Our Club is on the move and close to becoming the No.1 Republican Women's Club in our state!
